Historic Third Ward Gallery Night, October 21.
This was a very interesting piece. There was so little of the body. I found it quite intriguing to look at, trying to figure out what it means. It was only the head and one arm. I tried to take a picture of the card next to it, and failed. But it was still an interesting piece. I was thinking it could possibly mean there were so many missing pieces in their life that there is very little left to keep them steady. What got me thinking, too, was the arm holding the head. But the thing about this piece that got me curious was how this piece is balanced. Only the elbow holding the rest of it up was astonishing to me. That has got to take a lot of work.

At the Historic Third Ward Gallery Night, I was able to meet one of the artists, Crain, in which I was able to get his card, shown below. His style really caught my attention. I loved the colors he used and the way he used the colors in the shapes. It all really flowed so well. I liked how soft the colors were. Bright colors never really were favorable for me, with sensitive eyes to blame, so the soft colors really caught me. The artwork is still clear, what it is of, but the style and the way he used colors was almost....calming. I am thinking I might use his style in some of my projects. Since I can't keep to realistic designs, and could never pull off bright colors without it hurting, this style of soft colors with basic shapes works really well. Crain's style is really calming, and I actually wish I could have bought some of his work.

This piece was the first piece I saw on Gallery Night. I really liked the simplicity of the painting. The detail on the animals and flowing colors of blue in the sky were things I was gazing at for so long. The smoke was also very intriguing. It is simple, yet flows well with the style shown through the painting. I liked the very slight variations of color in the smoke, and the lines really show the smoke as a cloud, and the shape of the smoke really helped its ability to flow. The tiny clouds of smoke to the left of the bigger cloud showed a bit of wind flow, which helps to make it seem more like smoke.
This piece had also really caught my eye. The style seems a lot like a child's drawing. It had looked to me like it was drawn, erased, drawn again, and erased again before the right drawing came out.
Had it not been made from paint, I would not have been impressed. But this style, these colors, and the shapes work together to make it seem childish, yet curious. The way I see it, it looks easy, but it is likely to be really difficult to do. The colors also added to the childish style. Very soft, not as flowing to all points in the drawing. For me, it brings back memories from when I was first trying to paint when I was little. I would think it would do that for a lot of people, and I overall like the style as a whole. |

I had found a few artworks with bright colors I liked. Although the bright colors irritated my sensitive eyes, the styles were really simple and made me a bit curious, to look at the work more. A couple seemed to have mimicked Pop Art for me. Others were so basic, they also seem abstract. I liked the basic designs because I didn't have to look for so long for details. Simplicity is something I really enjoy.

Art Museum, December 2
Andy Warhol is my favorite Pop artist, and I took this photo. I had actually never seen this work of his. I always like how Warhol uses the same image, but with variations of the image, with such strong colors. Another thing that stands out about Warhol is the impressive exactness. It's hard to create the same figure multiple times, but Warhol copies the figure exactly, and then creates his variations with colors.

I also liked this mirror. I like how it gives the illusion of more people being in the mirror than just the person looking into it. The idea I like about it is that when someone looks into a mirror, they see things about themselves that they think about, perhaps thoughts that those around them don't need the person, or that they're too ugly. Perhaps people see their family, the image they want of their family, anything. Seeing the figures that seem to take the form of a family really brought out that thought, and I really liked that about the mirror work.

This piece caught my eye. I have rarely seen someone use lightbulbs in a piece. The string of lights from the ceiling was very beautiful. It was bright in the space it was in, and the way it comes together on the floor aids in its beauty, too. Such a bright pool of light makes it seem like light was dripping from the ceiling.

I especially like this case. I had walked by it at first, but when I looked inside, there was water and plants inside, under the ground. It was amazing! It's like the message is that when something is so normal, like a case, people tend to walk past it, but when someone actually sees the inside, it's beautful.

This piece stood out to me because it was made from broken plates. I liked how the artist used broken items to create a work of art. I especially liked it because it shows that even something broken doesn't need to be thrown out, something broken can still make something beautiful, which is something symbolic on an emotional level.

This one was fascinating because of what it looks like at first glace. When I first passed it, I thought it was crystals. When I passed it again, I got a second glance, and was surprised to see it's entirely made out of buttons. It looks like crystals, but requires a second look to see what it actually is. What the audience sees isn't nessecarily what it really is.

I just liked the space and movement on these pieces.
I liked how this collection told a story, the audience would have to see it from the beginning to understand it.
I liked these 3D pieces, they stood out when it came to lighting, and they were also so unusual that I spent a good emount of time admiring them. They look like everyday objects (dandelion, willow tree, etc), but they are also so much more intriguing.

Travel Journal
I liked this piece because it was set up so much better than any other travel journal I have ever seen.It had sections for people, places, maps, collections, and writing. It was so neat and so finished that I wanted one for the day I travel around the world, one country at a time. I have looked into travel journals, but none of them were this organized.
Old Abandoned Materials From Homes
I liked this piece because I got the feel of an old home, filled with long beyond abandoned items. She collected items from those homes to create this piece, even ripping off the door of a car. There were even cobwebs in the cabinet, making it look untouched even more. I absolutely adore how she set up the "room".
House Sculpture (made from wood)
This piece was more than mildly impressive. The inside details especially were to admire. Row of desks, stairs, doors and windows, and so much furniture! I adore the staircase below the house, it makes the support below the house seem even more natural, and seems to mimic an escape route of sorts, something all homes should have. If one person at least can escape, it's not too late to save everyone. I love that small staircase, and every detail inside.
Clay And Painting Set
This person focused on child abuse after her experience. She made one clay bandage for every time someone hurt her. She also painted hands and toes, because it's not sexist or biased in any way, nobody can say whose body this is. I feel like this is important, since abuse can happen to anyone, no matter the age or gender or sex. She also painted bruises, the most prominent sign of physical abuse.
I love how she focused on such a sensitive topic. As someone with levels of experience, I know it's hard to do this kind of thing, since it reminds the creator of memories they never wanted to have. I almost cried just looking at this piece.
I don't know if this was her family abusing, or another person, but the story is sad all the same. I love how she had the bravery to express her pain and openly express a sensitive topic.
Maybe one day, the people who hurt her will see this, and see how brave and strong she is now. She isn't afraid to express this topic, and she was strong enough to face her pain to make this piece. I would be glad if those bastards saw her piece. It would be the least they deserve as punishment. This piece would probably enrage them, seeing her express her painful experiences like this, but they don't matter. The biggest emotion I got from this piece was that with your personal experience, no matter what it is, you can turn it into a strong message

Hotel model
Evidently, these hotel rooms don't exist. They were created in Photoshop.

In this one, I liked the idea of humans being in the real world. Not the artificial world we created. We think we're on the top of the food chain. In our artificial world, we are. In the real and true world, we're not even close. If we went to the true world, we're afraid of being eaten alive, coming across lions.

I liked this piece because it reminded me of one of my favorite quotes of all time: "I don't mind having scars I can see. It's the ones you can't see that sting."
Hiding their front, this figure seems to be in a defense curl. As if to hide invisible scars. They're skinny and have obviously been traumatized by something. |

I liked this piece because it gave me this feeling of a ballroom dance in the space of a mirror, a feeling I often have about myself. In this piece, they seem to dance their way out of the mirror.
I liked this because it seems like it's giving the message of a gamble between pleasure (the horse), the person in this world, and the inevitable death (skeleton)
This reminded me of the river to hell in mythology. The river of dead spirits.
Another image that reminded me of the unity of man and nature. However, in this image, man is still creating artificial shelter.
|
This just gave me a nostalgia. When a child would swing across a branch.
I also liked this piece because of the seeming unity of man and nature, a concept humans now fear.
This set of paintings had this feeling of emotional death, the darkness many people feel. I liked that feeling, and the surrealism of the images, too.
This reminded me of danger and chaos. The storm outside forcing people to hide and take shelter. Some curled up and concerned, others unaffected and playing with toys.
I just liked this piece because it focuses on holding. How the hands held something, rather than an entire human figure, it's just their hands.
|
This one gave me this feeling of reliance. That they all have one another's backs. I liked that feeling, since I have never gotten that feeling from real people.
I like this piece very much. Goats and sheep are often sacrifices in religious beliefs and backgrounds. What if humans were the sacrifices, the goats and sheep?
This gave me this feeling of "don't go in there". A single light, in the woods, in the darkness of night, that is the fastest way to die in the real world. Yet he seems so curious about the setting.
This gave me the idea of going into a storm without cover, without protection. This is a feeling many people are afraid of. Being helpless to a storm. This feeling is why I liked this piece.

Artistic Interviews
I was able to speak with multiple artists. I asked about their life, their inspirations, their education, etc.
Tony Ostry is who I ended up using as my local artist.

MIAD Architecture exhibition
Students at MIAD created small shelters out of simple materials and exhibited them to the public before they slept in the shelters for the night.
I was analyzing some of the works and how they would not tip over or how they would keep the occupant warm at night, etc.
Slots at the top would allow wind to pass through instead of pressing against a wall, for example.
